In 1990, Peter Adkison founded Wizards of the Coast (or WOTC), which has its headquarters in Renton, Washington. Adkison named the company after a guild of wizards from a Dungeons & Dragons campaign he was playing at the time. The Primal Order, a supplement designed to work with any game system, brought Palladium Books legal trouble for references to its game and system. The company started publishing role-playing games in the late 1980s, such as the third edition of Talislanta and its own version of The Primal Order. It settled its lawsuit in 1993.

WOTC turned down Richard Garfield’s request in 1991 for a new board game called RoboRally because it was considered too expensive to produce. In response, Adkison asked Garfield to create a fast-playing, portable game. Garfield agreed.
