Plot
Mariam lives in a separate cottage with her disillusioned mother, Nana, a few miles from Herat. Born as a result of extra conjugal contact between her mom and Jalil, . Laila agrees to marry Rasheed when she finds out she is pregnant with Tariq’s child,. As she believes it is his child, in order to protect herself and the child. Rasheed rejects Aziza for being a girl when she gives birth to a daughter. Laila warms to Mariam as they both suffer abuse together. The pair become confidants and plan to flee Rasheed’s control and leave Kabul. However, Rasheed catches them and severely punishes them.
