Plot

Mariam lives in a separate cottage with her disillusioned mother, Nana, a few miles from Herat. Born as a result of extra conjugal contact between her mom and Jalil, . A rich financial expert from the neighborhood, the family lives outside of the city.  So as not to annoy Jalil’s three wives and nine real kids. Nana hates Jalil for abusing her and mistreating Mariam . Whom he visits every Thursday.

Her dad takes Mariam to see Pinocchio at a film he possesses for her fifteenth birthday celebration. He also acquaints her with her family members. Jalil swears to do as such, . But when he doesn’t come to get her, Mariam goes to Herat alone, against her mother’s wishes. She approaches her dad’s home.

Rasheed expresses romantic interest in Laila as she recovers from her injuries, much to Mariam’s dismay. A bomb blast in Pakistan killed Tariq and his family as well. Laila agrees to marry Rasheed when she finds out she is pregnant with Tariq’s child,.  As she believes it is his child, in order to protect herself and the child. Rasheed rejects Aziza for being a girl when she gives birth to a daughter. Laila warms to Mariam as they both suffer abuse together. The pair become confidants and plan to flee Rasheed’s control and leave Kabul. However, Rasheed catches them and severely punishes them.

Characters

  • Mariam, an ethnic Tajik born in Herat in 1959
  • In 1978, Laila, an ethnic Tajik, was born in Kabul. Rasheed, a Pashtun from Kabul who works as a shoemaker.  Tarik grew up with Laila in Kabul as an ethnic Pashtun. Previously Nana worked as a servant for Jalil in a village outside Herat.
  • Mariam is taught the Qur’an by Mullah Faizullah, a local Sufi imam who supports her and Nana. Mullah Faizullah dies of natural causes in 1989.
  • In addition to Mariam, Jail is a local businessman in Herat who has three wives and nine (later ten) legitimate children. He worked as a teacher first, and then at a factory after the war. Hakim is Laila’s father, a university educated man from Panjshir.
  • Originally from Panjshir, Fariba is Laila’s mother. As soon as she arrives in Kabul, she briefly meets Mariam. Aziza was born in 1993 in Kabul, illegitimate daughter of Laila and Tariq. Laila marries Rasheed after learning of Tariq’s alleged death in order to hide Aziza’s illegitimacy.
  • He was born in 1997 in Kabul to Laila and Rasheed. At first, Laila considers aborting him because he is Rasheed’s biological child.
