There must be a minimum of one other swarm adjacent to the Insect Plague (that is, the swarms must fill one contiguous area). To share the world with other creatures, you need to summon swarms of wasps. The swarms attack anything within their sphere. Swarms remain stationary after being summoned, and will not pursue creatures that flee. It is useless at this level. Put it on the most exit from the open-air market or something, and then use it indirectly on PCs.

Biting locusts fill a sphere of 20 feet in diameter centered within the range you choose. The sphere extends around the corners of the area. There is light obscuration in the area surrounding the Sphere for the duration. Difficult terrain surrounds the sphere. The creatures in the world must make a Constitution saving throw when the world appears. A creature takes 4d10 piercing damage if it fails its save, or half as much if it succeeds. When a creature enters or ends its turn in the spell’s area for the first time, it must also make the saving throw.

Whenever you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d10 per slot level above 5. All creatures in the environment were stung relentlessly by the summoned insects, which reduced visibility to ten feet (3 meters) and prevented spellcasting. It was impossible to avoid the swarms using armor or invisibility. During a random direction, small creatures and anything with declining morale would run at top speed until they were well away from the plague.

Insects didn’t pursue fleeing targets during the spell, but remained within the area where they were summoned. Strong winds or sustained large fires drove the insects away, but a single blast from a fireball only cleared a small section.

In its newer, more advanced versions, the spell does not contain the Divine. Focus or Holy Symbol requirement of the older versions, but only verbal and somatic components. In earlier versions of the recipe, including the version that followed the Second Sundering.  There was also a pinch of sugar, a few grains and a small amount of fat.

Thousands of insects swarm into an excellent cloud. Within the area, vision is obscured, and creatures within it take 1 damage point per round. When a creature has 2 HD or less, they simply flee during a line until they’re 24″ from the cloud. A morale check is allowed to creatures with 5 HD or less to prevent them from fleeing. Swarms do not flee once they have arrived.

Insect Plague uses one charge to cause a swarm of harmless flying insects to open up in your 30-foot radius. The insects remain for 10 minutes, making the world hard for any creatures except for you to see. A breeze of at least 10 miles per hour can disperse the swarm and end the effect.
